Veterinary Advice For Your New Puppy
Today your puppy has been vaccinated against: Distemper, Hepatitis, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Leptospira. A second vaccination will be given in 3 weeks’ time. Your puppy will not be fully immunised until this second injection and should not be taken for a walk or mix with other dogs until this time. Please avoid areas with lakes and rivers until 2 weeks after the second injection to ensure the Leptospirosis portion of the vaccine has had time to work.
If you are going to be taking your puppy to training classes then we would suggest vaccinating against Kennel Cough.
You will have been prescribed Milbemax worming treatment for your puppy. You should worm your puppy monthly with Advocate, plus give Milbemax at least every 6 months. We recommend that you bring your puppy in for regular weight checks, so that we can ensure that the correct worming dose is being given.
Always feed your puppy a good quality diet. At the Bearsted Veterinary Surgery we recommend feeding Hills Vet Essentials Puppy Food.
Microchipping is a simple, permanent way of identifying your pet. This can be done at any time. For small puppies we can provide the new "Mini Chip" which is much smaller than the regular microchip
If you are not planning on using your puppy for breeding, then we recommend neutering at six months of age.
You will need to treat your puppy for fleas all year round. At the Bearsted Veterinary Surgery we recommend using Advocate.
We recommend that you have insurance for your puppy. If your puppy is under a year old, then we can offer you a “no obligation” four weeks free insurance with PETPLAN.
It is extremely important for puppies to socialise from an early age. Once puppies have had their first vaccination, they are invited to join our puppy parties, where they can mix with other puppies of a similar age.
